This coming weekend is Labor Day weekend, the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of fall and harvest. This weekend is sure to be exciting, as it is the “last big weekend” of summer. Tasting rooms become calm and guests can linger over their beer and wine samples and get into discussions about what they are tasting. It is this relaxed feeling that makes fall perhaps the best time to visit the North Fork.
It doesn’t feel right to cover the North Fork and not mention the sad passing of North Fork Table Chef Gerry Hayden on Wednesday from ALS. He was one of the champions of the “farm-to-table” movement here on the North Fork, working with local farms to source the best possible produce and meats for his kitchen. He was a mentor to many, believing rightfully so, that as a region we swim or sink together. His restaurant has been a destination for birthdays, anniversary’s and celebrations. It is with the joy that his kitchen and staff helped us all to celebrate that we should remember Gerry. The North Fork will not be the same without the big guy, but he put so much of himself out there that there are many people who will carry forward and continue to work to improve the North Fork. We at North-Forks offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Claudia, his partners and friends Mike and Mary Mraz, and his team at the North Fork Table.
Upcoming events this weekend include Lenz Winery on Friday as they pair sparkling wine and oysters in an evening event. On Saturday, Bridge Lane is hosting Music On The Lawn to benefit the Women’s Fund of Long Island. On Wednesday, Bistro 72 is hosting a peach-themed evening as part of their fundraiser for the Davis Peach Farm in Wading River. Davis suffered huge fruit losses during a hail storm in August.
Our Calendar is the best place to look for upcoming events to plan your time here, but here is a sample of what’s happening in the coming week:
Friday: The North Fork Table begins the day with a farmer’s market and rounds it off with a lunch truck, champagne garden and restaurant. A videographer will be present at the Farmer’s Market to allow people to express how Chef Gerry Hayden touched them. The Old Fields Vineyard begins their weekend Tastings By The Bay on Fridays and has two seatings each day through Sunday. Roanoke Vineyards has pizza on the piazza at their Love Lane tasting room. If you haven’t been to their main winery, remember it closes to all but wine club members at the end of this year. The North Fork Food Truck will be selling McCall’s free-range, grass fed Charolais burgers at McCall’s Wines in the evening. Live music is scheduled at Pindar, Diliberto, Bistro 72, Seaside Grill, Raphael, Macari and Castello di Borghese. Lenz Winery is celebrating Friday with Oysters and Cuvee.
Saturday: As mentioned, Bridge Lane is hosting Music On The Lawn to benefit the Women’s Fund of Long Island. The North Fork Food Truck will be serving lunch at the North Fork Table and Inn. Live music can be found at Diliberto, Baiting Hollow Vineyards, Jamesport, Lieb, Cooperage Inn, Jason’s Vineyards, Clovis Point, Martha Clara, Sherwood House, Castello di Borghese, Seaside Grill, Bistro 72 and Pindar. Paumanok Vineyards will be serving oysters and the Old Fields Vineyard continues Tasting By The Bay. Castello di Borghese and Sannino Bella Vita Vineyard have walking tours and tastings today. As always, there are many other places to go to just sip wine, as mentioned on Saturday.
Monday is Labor Day, the unofficial start of Fall. Restaurant Alure’s lobster bash continues for lunch and dinner. Bedell Cellars, they save their events for weekdays and today they will have live music and food trucks. First & South celebrates Monday evening with their weekly pig roast, and there are just two remaining so don’t put it off. PawPaw Pop Up takes over Bruce and Son’s Cheese Imporium. Lieb, Martha Clara and Bedell Cellars all have live music.
Tuesday: Shinn has self-guided tour and tastings (all week). Just because there are no planned events doesn’t mean that the North Fork has closed down. In fact, it’s the perfect time to come out and enjoy the peace and quiet an off-season weekday brings. Tasting rooms and restaurants are all open their regular hours.
Wednesday: Little Creek Oysters celebrates Hump Day with happy hour, and Bistro 72 is hosting a peach-themed evening as part of their fundraiser for the Davis Peach Farm in Wading River. Davis suffered huge fruit losses during a hail storm in August.
Thursday: Castello di Borghese has a winemakers walk. There’s live music at Raphael.
